Two hundred years ago it was a different heavy metal that transformed Birmingham into the industrial workshop of the world, and the energy that drove it has never declined, even if the industry did. Its place has been taken by a thriving services sector, and the Big City Plan, started in 2008, is turning that buzz into a mighty regeneration programme that will make the city centre five times bigger, create iconic buildings and even add a new city park.
You don’t have to wait around though. There’s no end of things to do, see, taste and enjoy. Whether it’s the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s home at Symphony Hall that attracts you, the National Indoor Arena or dozens of other venues, there’s lots of entertainment. If you’re looking for taste bud stimulation you won’t find a more diverse menu, although they are particularly proud of the Balti. The Balti Triangle alone claims at least fifty restaurants! The city boasts Europe’s second largest St Patrick’s Day Parade, they put the fan in sports fanatics and if you’re fond of your retail therapy look no further than the new Bullring Shopping Centre just to get you started. It’s Brum, it’s brill and it’s waiting…
